Red White and Blue Rice Krispie Treats Recipe Directions
Grab all of your ingredients and let’s get going! Food coloring, sprinkles, butter, mini marshmallows and Rice Krispies cereal. You’ll also need 3 bowls to prepare and mix the Rice Krispie treats with the food coloring and a 8 x 8 inch baking dish to layer the treats in three layers.
Lightly spray the inside of the 8 x 8 baking dish with Spray Oil and set aside. Divide butter and mini marshmallows into 3 equal parts, and place into 3 separate bowls
For bowl one combine 1 teaspoon butter and approximately 2 cups of mini marshmallows and microwave for about 40 seconds (or until the marshmallows are fully melted).
Quickly remove the bowl from the microwave and add ½ teaspoon blue gel food coloring to the mini marshmallow mixture. Stir with a spoon until all marshmallows are completely blue.
Working quickly (before the mini marshmallows cool off) add the 2 cups of Rice Krispies to the blue mini marshmallow mixture and stir until all the Rice Krispies are blue in color.
Quickly scrape out all the Blue Rice Krispies mixture into the bottom of the lightly sprayed 8 x 8 baking pan with a flat scraping spatula. Distribute the mixture equally along the bottom of the pan to make the blue layer. Press down on Rice Krispies until you have a smooth-ish, leveled layer.
Bowl two repeats the exact same process as bowl one, except this bowl will have no food coloring and create the white layer. When you’ve completed the white layer, quickly pour it over the blue layer of Rice Krispies. Distribute the mixture equally on top of the blue layer. Press down on Rice Krispies until you have a smooth-ish, leveled layer.
Bowl three repeats the exact same process as bowl one, but in this bowl you will add ½ teaspoon red gel food coloring. After mixing the red Rice Krispies, quickly pour them out over the blue and white layer. Distribute the mixture equally on top of the white layer. Press down on Rice Krispies until you have a smooth-ish, leveled layer. When you’re all done it should look like the image below.
Look at how pretty these red, white, blue AND gold sprinkles are! I had to give you a closeup because the pictures just don’t do them justice! They are gorgeous and you can find them on Amazon HERE. I can’t wait to use these on some patriotic cupcakes I have planned!
Add ¼ cup red, white and blue sprinkles (or more…who doesn’t love sprinkles!?!?!) to the top of the mixture before it completely cools. This will help the sprinkles to stick to the treats and not fall off.
Allow your red, white and blue Rice Krispie treats recipe to cool and firm for at least 30 minutes before cutting. This will make about 16 – 2″ x 2″ treats. Store your Rice Krispie treats at room temperature in a sealed, airtight container.
