How to Make Homemade DIY Hand Sanitizer Gel +FREE PRINTABLE LABELS & RECIPE CARD!

With the Covid 19 Corona Virus pandemic slowing spreading throughout the U.S. I thought it would be a good idea to share how to make homemade DIY hand sanitizer gel.  With just a few common ingredients you’ll be able to whip up several bottles anytime you need to!  We’ve also included a FREE printable recipe card for your home emergency binders and labels for your homemade DIY hand sanitizer gel bottles.

I live about 30 mins north of the largest outbreak of Covid 19 Corona virus in the United States and you CAN’T find any hand sanitizer any where in the state! We’re also running out of basics like toilet paper, bleach products and medicine.  Here are some shots I took of the shelves at our local Walmart this morning (3/6/2020)

The toilet paper aisle was completely wiped out!  Employees were re-stocking from pallets.

All bleach based products and cleaning wipes were completely gone. No hand sanitizer either.

The medicine aisle was completely picked over. Many components that go into common over the counter medicines are manufactured in China. With extensive factory shut-downs in China (due to the Covid 19 Corona Virus) basic medical supplies could be in short supply in the near future.  This has caused a run on over the counter medicines in our area.  There was also no isopropyl alcohol!

I just checked Amazon this morning and a two pack of Purrell hand sanitizer (my preferred go to hand sanitizer) is going for $60!!!!!  A pack of 8 mini hand sanitizers is going for $70!!!!!  I took a screen shot of it below:

Is this price gouging?  You betcha!  But don’t worry….a little country girl ingenuity is all that’s needed here.  I’m going to give you a recipe to make Homemade DIY Hand Sanitizer Gel at home for completely reasonable prices.  You’ll be able to make as much as you need for your family.  I’m also including a FREE printable recipe card and FREE Printable labels for your bottles.

I think that as this spreads across the U.S. there may be shortages in your areas just like we have here.  Print out a copy of this recipe to keep in your home binder or emergency kit.  OR better yet, make some at home to keep in your emergency kit.

Please share this with your loved ones on Facebook or email.  I have found the lowest prices I can on these items so you can order them without going out to the stores.  I found bottles of alcohol for less than a $1 on Walmart.com and you can still get aloe vera gel & vegetable glycerin cheap on Amazon (thankfully).

After you download our recipe and labels be sure to check out another relevant post for these times from my friend Jo over at A Rose Tinted World.  She shows you How to Sew Your Own Simple, Protective Face Mask at home.

Note: This recipe is in compliance with 2020 CDC recommendations for making DIY hand sanitizer.  This is not meant to be a substitute for washing your hands with hot water and soap.  This is meant for use in areas where hand washing is not immediately or readily available.  Use this while you’re out and about town without access to soap and water but please wash your hands with soap and hot water as soon as you can (soap and water is still the most effective defense against Covid 19 Corona Virus according to the CDC).

Homemade DIY Hand Sanitizer Gel

Homemade DIY Hand Sanitizer Gel Recipe Ingredients

2/3 C  Isopropyl Alcohol (99% is recommended)

4 teaspoons  Aloe Vera Gel

4 teaspoons  Vegetable Glycerin

8-10 Drops  Lavender (or Your Choice of) Essential Oil (optional)

Travel Sized Squeeze Bottles

Funnel or Turkey Baster

Directions:

Mix Isopropyl Alcohol, Aloe Vera Gel and Vegetable Glycerin in a bowl until thoroughly combined.  If you want to improve the smell and enjoy the benefits of essential oils you can plop 8-10 drops of Lavender (or Your Choice of Essential Oil) and stir it in (but this is completely optional).

Use a Funnel or Turkey Baster to load Travel Sized Squeeze Bottles with your DIY homemade hand sanitizer gel.

*Note: If you can’t get your hands on vegetable glycerin you can simply mix isopropyl alcohol with aloe vera gel but it WILL be much harsher on your skin and hands with repeated use.

Can the aloe vera gel be substituted? If you can’t find the Banana Boat brand in stock anywhere can you use Product TitleFruit of the Earth Aloe Vera 100% Gel?

Hi Stacy…you can sub another brand of aloe if it has a preservative of some kind in it. Check the ingredients and make sure it has one. Chances are if it is on a shelf it has one to extend life of the product and keep bacterial growth down but double check to make sure. Don’t use fresh aloe from a plant for instance.

Hi There Chundra…..you can order Vegetable Glycerin online. I do include a link (to Amazon) on the recipe in the post. Look for the bright pink link on the vegetable glycerin line in the recipe. Thanks for stopping by and let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Connie! Thanks for stopping by to check out our DIY Hand Sanitizer recipe. Hand sanitizer is non-existent in my area (near Seattle) and I’m guessing the same is true in your area.
