I don’t know about you but I have A LOT of washi tape in my crafting stash. I’m completely addicted to the cute washi tape designs- I just CAN’T stop buying. I am ALWAYS looking for ways to use washi tape and washi tape ideas. I came across this GORGEOUS washi tape frame on Pinterest and I knew I had to try and make something similar!
How Do You Use Washi Tape to Frame a Picture?
There are two ways to frame a picture with washi tape. First, you can use washi tape alone to make a four sided frame and stick your photos to something (like a wall, journal or scrapbook). You could also use wall art or art that you’ve created to make a gallery (like the image below).
You can also use a store bought frame and wrap it with washi tape (which we’ll show you how to do today). It’s super easy and doesn’t require many materials. Here is how our washi tape frame turned out:
Can You Use Washi Tape on Photos?
Washi tape is low tact and safe to use on or around photos, posters or artwork. It can easily be removed without harming your treasured photos, posters or artwork. It’s also pretty safe for the surfaces too.
Does Washi Tape Rip Paper?
It’s highly unlikely to rip paper or become permanently adhered unless it has been left on for many, many years. It’s more likely to de-adhere over many years as it can lose it tact over time.
We’re going to show you how we turned a boring white frame into something totally fabulous with a little washi tape. This washi tape frame makes a great DIY gift for Christmas or birthdays that you can quickly make in an afternoon. You can even order frames in bulk to make a lot of gifts quickly. I love this craft because it is fun for all ages- it’s a great washi tape craft for adults, teenagers & kids alike.
Washi Tape Frame Supplies:
You’ll need just a few things for this crazy easy craft project. The frame has to be flat on the front and the sides for the best results. Complex geometry can make these diagonal washi tape lines look a little strange so keep it simple. You can use washi tape from your craft stash but if you don’t have any there are tons of inexpensive washi tape options on Amazon. You can also use some of our FREE printable washi tape in this project.
- 4×6 White Photo Frame (must be flat on the front and sides)
- Washi Tape (this is the exact washi tape we used in the project, I also like this rainbow washi)
- Free Printable Washi Tape (you will need printable sticker paper to print the washi on)
- Scissors
How to Make Washi Tape Photo Frame Directions:
Carefully remove the back of your 4×6 frame, along with the glass and paper insert. Make sure that your frame is clean and free of dust or grease that may interfere with your washi tape properly adhering to the frame.
Unravel a small amount of washi tape, and center it diagonally on one corner of the frame, about ½ inch from the end of the frame. Gently adhere the washi tape to the front, and the sides of the frame. Then continue to wrap the washi tape around to the back of the frame.
Use a pair of scissors to carefully cut the washi tape at the edge of the back of the frame. Use your fingers to firmly adhere the washi tape to all sides of the frame.
To add the second strip of washi tape, you will want to unravel a larger amount of tape then you did for the first strip. After you have unraveled the washi tape you will then carefully place it about ½ inch under the first piece. The washi tape should be on both the top and right sides of the frame.
Use a pair of scissors to cut the washi tape right in the center. Then wrap each of the sides like you did in the previous steps. Make sure that you wrap the washi all the way around the frame so that you can see the tape on the sides too (see finished photos). You will repeat this process several times until you have completely wrapped the entire frame.
