This tasty drink is often consumed by young witches and wizards, especially when they visit Hogsmeade, the only all-wizarding village in all of Britain. While it sounds alcoholic, it actually isn’t.
You can enjoy a cold butterbeer at Universal Studios Orlando. They have a HUGE Wizarding World of Harry Potter division in their theme park that is NOT to be missed. The exact butterbeer recipe from Universal is a closely guarded secret, but it’s not difficult to recreate for yourself at home with our copycat butterbeer recipe!
Every year I host a Harry Potter movie series watch party for my family. We binge the ENTIRE movie series over a long weekend and I try to make some treats from the movie series. SO I’m especially thrilled to share the copycat Hogsmeade butterbeer from Harry Potter with you guys today. This recipe is SUPER EASY and there aren’t a lot of ingredients either.

This copycat Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe is perfect for Harry Potter themed parties, movie nights, birthday parties or just a hot summer day! A bit of butterscotch gives this Harry Potter drink it’s signature flavor…but it actually contains REAL butter too!
With a really low prep time of about 10 minutes, this the perfect last minute Harry Potter themed treat! The hardest part of this recipe is being patient enough not to drink them all!
EASY Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Makes: 2 Servings
Whipped Cream for Topping
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream
1 cup Cream Soda (We LOVE & use IBC Cream Soda)
2 TBSP Unsalted Butter, Softened
2 TBSP Butterscotch Sauce (We Used Butterscotch Sundae Syrup)

How to Make Harry Potter Butterbeer Step by Step!
STEP ONE – Gather All Your Ingredients
Grab your blender, vanilla ice cream, IBC Cream Soda, room temp unsalted butter, Butterscotch Sundae Syrup and whipped cream.
STEP TWO – Add Ice Cream & Cream Soda to the Blender
Add 1 cup of vanilla ice cream that is just a bit soft and 1 cup of IBC Cream Soda to your blender. Blend until smooth and there aren’t any chunks of ice cream.
STEP THREE – Add Unsalted Butter & Butterscotch
Add 2 tbsp of room temp unsalted butter and 2 tbsp of Butterscotch Sundae Syrup to the ice cream mixture and blend until combined. It should look creamy like the image below.
STEP FOUR – Pour and Decorate
Pour the butter beer into glass mugs and top with a swirl of whipped cream. Drizzle the whipped cream with more Butterscotch Sundae Syrup.
Alcoholic Butterbeer Recipe
If you want to make an alcoholic version of butterbeer (for adults) you could swap out 1 ounce of cream soda for either vanilla vodka or butterscotch schnapps. Make sure it’s a one ounce for one ounce swap or your butterbeer may be a bit runny. One ounce = one shot glass.
Copycat Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe Pro-tips:
- If you want to take this Harry Potter drink over the top you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top of the drink before you add a swirl of whipped cream.
- Put your Irish Coffee Glass Mugs in the freezer for an hour before making your butterbeer. This will keep the drinks colder longer.
- If you don’t have unsalted butter on hand you can use salted butter or butter extract.
