Ribbon candy is a type of hard candy that is fashioned into a unique, ribbon-like shape with wavy folds. It is often brightly colored and can be flavored with various essences like peppermint, cinnamon, or fruit flavors. Ribbon candy is particularly popular during the holiday season of yesteryear and is frequently used both as a decorative item and a sweet treat.
For many years now, I’ve been growing a large vintage Christmas collection that includes LOTS of Shiney Brite ornaments and a vintage pom pom tree. Homespun felt Christmas decorations (like Grandma used to make) are a big park of the vintage Christmas theme. When I saw these handmade vintage felt Christmas ornaments in a fellow vintage collectors collection- I knew I had to try them!
You don’t have to love vintage Christmas ornaments to appreciate these cute felt Christmas ornaments. Maybe it will remind you of those Christmas candies Grandma used to put out during the holidays which is all the nostalgia you need!
DIY Felt Christmas Candy Ornament Supplies
I used monochromatic shades (like dark pink and light pink) as well as using plain white felt. The variety is nice and looks reminiscent of old fashioned ribbon candy. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color to achieve that vintage vibe on your Christmas tree!

How to Make DIY Felt Ornaments Step By Step
STEP ONE – Cut Felt to Size
Using a quilting mat, straight edge and a rotary cutter, cut the felt lengthwise into 1.25″ inch strips. You can use scissors but be extra careful to make sure that your cuts are really straight and each strip is the same width.
Use two different colors for the Christmas ribbon candy design. You’ll need two strips of one color and one strip of another color. In this example I’ve used two dark pink felt strips and one light pink. I’ve also cut two strips of dark pink and one white. The white definetly gives more contrast.
STEP TWO – Hot Glue One End
Align all three strips of felt so that they are all even on one end. Add a small strip of hot glue between each layer. Do this on one end only.
STEP THREE – Fold and Glue
Fold over the strips and use a pencil or pen as a guide to space the loop.
STEP FOUR – Create More Loops
Keep folding the felt and creating loops. You’ll want to completely mock up the ornament before you do any hot gluing. This is to make sure that you end the ornament with enough felt and that each layer is equal in size. You can use a straight pin or two to hold things in place. When everything is nice and equal you can add a dab of hot glue between each loop.
STEP FIVE – Create Ornament Hangar
Using a sewing needle and thread the needle with clear fishing line OR matching embroidery floss. Tie the ends off in a double knot to create a loop. Thread through a colorful bead (optional) and then stick the sewing needle in the bottom center of the ribbon candy ornament. Push the needle through the center of the ribbon candy all the way to the top. Add another colorful bead (optional) and clip the end of the fishing line or floss to remove the sewing needle. Add a double knot to the end of the fishing line or floss to create a loop to hang the ornament on the tree.
How to Make a Felt Peppermint Candy
Next we’ll show you how we made a peppermint Christmas candy. This one looks best when you use 3 different colors of felt. We used dark pink, light pink and a white felt center.
STEP ONE – Cut Felt to Size & Glue
Using a quilting mat, straight edge and a rotary cutter, cut the felt lengthwise into 1.25″ inch strips. You can use scissors but be extra careful to make sure that your cuts are really straight and each strip is the same width.
Use three different colors for the peppermint candy design. You’ll need three strips in three different colors. In this example I’ve used dark pink felt, light pink felt and one white.
You’ll want to stagger the strips so that they are about 1/8 ” inch apart on one end. Add a small strip of hot glue between each layer to secure one end. Staggering helps making the rolling easier.
STEP TWO – Roll and Hot Glue
Starting with the glued/staggered end roll the felt tightly to make it look like a peppermint. Add a small dab of hot glue here and there along the way to keep it from unraveling. Secure with a straight pin through the center.
STEP THREE – Cut Away Excess Felt and Glue
Cut away any excess felt with scissors. Add a small strip of hot glue between all the layers and then secure the end to the peppermint roll with a strip of hot glue. Remove the straight pin.
STEP FOUR – Create Candy Wrapper Ends
Cut another strip of coordinating felt 1.25″ inches wide and 2″ inches long. Snip off a triangle from each end to make it look like a fancy candy wrapper.
STEP FIVE – Make A Pleat & Glue
On the opposite end of the 2 inch strip you’ll cut a small 1/2″ inch slit with scissors. Overlap the two felt tabs that were created and secure with a small dab of hot glue. Repeat for the other piece of 2″ inch felt. This creates a pleat and a natural bend in the felt which will make things easy to glue up in the next step.
STEP SIX – Glue on Candy Wrapper Ends
Center the candy wrapper ends you just created with the center on each side of the peppermint roll. Secure with a small strip of hot glue.
Using a sewing needle and thread the needle with clear fishing line OR matching embroidery floss. Tie the ends off in a double knot to create a loop. Stick the sewing needle in the bottom center of the peppermint candy ornament. Push the needle through the center of the ornament all the way to the top and pull through. Clip the end of the fishing line or floss to remove the sewing needle. Add a double knot to the end of the fishing line or floss to create a loop to hang the ornament on the tree.
