How to Make Baked Christmas Donuts Step by Step
Step 1: Combine Dry Ingredients
Gather all of your ingredients and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using Butter Flavored Cooking Spray, coat the Non-stick Donut Pan cavities generously with cooking spray and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, add all purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Whisk to thoroughly combine dry ingredients.
Step 2: Add Wet Ingredients to Dry Ingredients
Add milk, vanilla extract, peppermint extract and melted unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix well to incorporate and create the chocolate peppermint donut batter.
Step 3: Transfer Donut Batter to Bag
Transfer the donut batter into a sandwich bag and snip off a large corner of the bag (if you have piping bags available you can use those instead). Pipe the peppermint donut batter into the donut pan cavities. Each cavity should be about ¾ full.
Step 4: Bake Donuts
Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted at the center comes out clean. Use a butter knife to loosen up the donuts from the Non-stick Donut Pan and transfer to a cooling rack. Place cooling rack over a baking sheet prior to the next step.
Step 5: Glaze the Donuts in Chocolate Frosting
To make the chocolate frosting melt the butter in a small bowl. Add powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and peppermint extract.
Mix all ingredients until chocolate frosting is smooth. Slowly add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired frosting consistency is reached.
Dip each donut directly into the chocolate frosting. For a thicker layer of frosting dip the donut into the frosting twice.
Step 6: Sprinkle With Crushed Candy Canes
Place glazed donuts onto a cookie cooling rack that is standing over the cookie sheet.
Grab a few Christmas peppermint candy canes and place them into a ziploc bag. Crush with a wooden mallet until you have small pieces. Sprinkle over the donuts to decorate and enjoy this memorable Christmas breakfast.
Store your donuts in a covered or airtight container so they won’t dry out. You can make these ahead of any event (like Christmas morning) and the instructions are below!
Make Ahead Instructions:
These peppermint donuts can be made ahead of Christmas morning breakfast and turn out fantastic! You can refrigerate these delicious treats up to 2 days before frosting and consuming.
To freeze, wrap EACH unfrosted donut with plastic wrap and place in Ziploc freezer bag. The donuts can be in the freezer for up to 2 months.
To freeze frosted donuts, place them in the freezer in a single layer first for 1 hour to allow the glaze to harden and freeze. Wrap each donut individually or stack them in Ziploc freezer bags separated by a layer of parchment paper.
Transfer any frozen donuts to the fridge the night before you want to enjoy them. You can also set them on the counter to allow them to defrost naturally before consuming. Keep them covered or in an airtime container so they won’t dry out.
