How to Make a DIY Laser Cut Earrings Step by Step
Below is a short video on how we made our DIY laser cut earrings. We also have written directions with photos below if you prefer to read the directions. If you just got your laser cutting machine this is an easy beginner project. I’m new to this machine and I was able to quickly cut my earrings in minutes with no problems!
STEP ONE- Cut Out Your Earrings
We’re using the Xtool M1 10 watt laser cutter and the Xtool creative space software. Load our FREE Laser Cut Earring Files into Xtool creative space. Size the earrings to be 1.5 inches wide by 1.25 inches high. This fits the 3mm macrame cord perfectly with very little gap. Xtool creative space, set the object to cut at 100% power, 5 mm/s speed and 1 pass (per the manufacturers guidelines). Place the 3mm Basswood Plywood Sheet in the machine on top of the triangular prisms. Frame and cut.
STEP TWO- Sand the Earrings
Using very fine grip sandpaper (we used 220 grit) sand in the direction of the wood to remove any burn marks from the laser. Do this to both sides of the wood cut earring. You can also mask the plywood with blue painters tape before you laser cut to prevent this from happening.
Sanding is great surface prep for staining or painting. If you did want to stain or paint the wood cut earrings then now is when you would want to do it.
STEP THREE- Remove Small Parts & Dust
Using a weeding tool remove any small pieces of wood. Using compressed air or blowing on it with you mouth you can remove the dust. You can also use a tack clothe to grab any remaining dust.
STEP FOUR- Add Macrame Cord to Bar
Cut your macrame cords (we used this inexpensive starter kit) to about 10 inches in length. Double over the cord and thread it through the earring bar. Take the cord ends and put them through the loop like the photo above.
STEP FIVE- Repeat for Remaining Colors
Repeat this process with the remaining colors. We were able to fit 5 colors onto the earrings bar and we went with cheery rainbow colors but you could select any colors you like.
STEP SIX- Untwist the Macrame Cord
Untwist all of the macrame cord until you have individual strands.
STEP SEVEN- Comb the Macrame Strands
Using a fine tooth comb we are going to comb the strands of the macrame cord. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Comb both sides. This will help straighten out the cord strands. The more combing you do the better it will look!
STEP EIGHT- Add Earring Findings
Add two jump rings and a hook to the woodcut earrings (we used this inexpensive starter kit) with needle nose pliers. The two jump rings help to orientate the earring in the right direction when worn.
STEP NINE- Cut Strands to Length
Using a Rotary Cutting Wheel, Cutting Mat & Acrylic Ruler cut the strands to the desired length. Start long with some practice cuts. Try on the earrings and see what length works for you.
