How to Make DIY Felt Santa Ornaments Step By Step

STEP ONE – Cut Felt to Size
Print the FREE Felt Ornament Pattern and cut out felt pieces as indicated. If using foam, cut out your foam piece as well. If you have polyester fiber fill or quilt batting laying around your craft room this can also be used to plump up the sugar cookie.
Remember that you’ll need two Santa heads cut…leave one plain for the back of the sugar cookie.

STEP TWO – Trace the Shapes
Take one sugar cookie felt piece and place the hat, beard and fluffy ball on top so that they are exactly where you want them. Use a fabric pen to mark this alignment. This will help us get everything in the right place as we hand sew these pieces in place. If you prefer, a straight pin can also be used.

STEP THREE – Sew On the Hat
Start by attaching Santa’s red hat. Do not stitch the bottom edge as it will be underneath the beard piece. You can use a running stich or back stich to secure everything down.

STEP FOUR – Sew on the Beard & Hat Fur
Hand sew the beard using the outline you created in step 2 as a guide. I recommend starting with the inside edge first.

STEP FIVE – Glue on the Facial Features
Sew the ball to the tip of Santa’s hat. You can remove the fabric pen outline with heat now. Glue on the eyes and nose to Santa’s face.

STEP SIX – Add Foam, Ribbon & Seal
Sandwich the foam in between the front and back of your cookie. Use some craft clips or a straight pin to hold it in place. Using a blanket stitch, close up the cookie (see next photo).
If you are turning this into an ornament you can add a loop of festive Christmas ribbon to the top before completely sealing the cookie OR sew the loop onto the back of the ornament after you finish the seal. Some like to use a loop of clear fishing line so it isn’t as obvious.
