How to Make a Disco Ball Step by Step
We have detailed, step by step instructions for both Cricut and non-Cricut users below. If you’re not using a Cricut you’ll need a 2 Inch Circle Punch as there are over 200 circles needed to fill a 12 inch Styrofoam ball.

Step 1: Cut Out the Circles
For Cricut Users:
Cut the Silver Foil Wrapping Paper to the size of your light grip mat cutting area. Press down with a scraping/smoothing tool and work out any air bubbles. Be gentle, foil wrapping paper can scratch easily.
Download our FREE circle cut files. Upload the circle cut file to Cricut design space. Select the simple option and then select cut only operation. Select the circle you uploaded from the library and add it to the canvas. Resize the circle to be two inches in diameter. Click the “make it” button on the top right. Load the prepared light grip canvas with the foil wrapping paper and cut on a paper setting. Press the go button.
You’ll need to cut about 215 circles. The exact number depends on how you space out the rows on the Styrofoam ball or the size of the ball. Smaller balls require less and larger balls may require more.
For Non Cricut Users:
Unroll some of the Silver Foil Wrapping Paper and use a 2 Inch Circle Punch to punch about 215 circles. You can use scissors but it’s pretty challenging to make nice looking, round circles with scissors. Also, 215 circles is an insane amount to cut by hand! One other option is using an exacto knife or finger tip craft knife and our FREE circle PDF template to make your circles.

Step 2: Tape the Foil Circles to the Styrofoam Ball
Put the Styrofoam ball onto a round spool of tape to keep it from rolling around. Locate the center line on the ball and tape (with Balloon Tape) one foil circle along the center line with half of the circle on each side of the line. Next you’ll create a circle of circles around that first foil circle. Repeat with concentric circles.
Note that you are not taping down the entire circle…more like half of the circle. Check out our final images as a guide. The circles should kind of hang down off of the ball.

Step 3: Continue Making Concentric Circles
Tape one foil circle down at a time using the Balloon Tape until you cover the entire surface in concentric circles. Overlap the pieces slightly to ensure that no part of the white Styrofoam ball is visible. It may take a few days for the foil paper to relax and conform to the new shape of the ball.

Step 4: Glue in a Hook
When the entire ball is already covered, coat the screw part of your hook screw and screw it in to the top of the disco ball. This is to make sure that the hook is securely attached. Add an extra ring of hot glue around the hook after you’ve screwed it in to make it extra secure.

Step 5: Hang the Disco Ball
For best results use clear fishing line to hang your disco ball. Optionally, you can purchase a rotating disco ball spinner that includes LED lights for maximum disco effect!
