How To Build a Butterfly Step By Step

Step 1: Cut Crepe Paper Streamer
Unravel about 2 feet of the crepe paper streamer. Split/cut it down the middle with scissors so that you have two strips of tissue paper that are more narrow. Repeat with other streamer colors.

Step 2: Cut Butterfly Body & Wings
Print out the butterfly and body onto heavy cardstock. If you don’t have cardstock on hand you can also wrap a paper roll with the PDF patterns we provide in the download using regular printer paper. Cut out the butterfly using scissors or the PNG cut files provided and your Cricut machine (use print then cut function). Cut out the colorful rectangle (butterfly’s body) and trim to a length of about 6.5 inches.

Step 3: Glue Streamers to Butterfly Body
Glue the ends of the streamer to the inside bottom of the butterfly’s body. Alternate colors and glue each strip close together so it looks full. Leave about 1/2-3/4 of an inch bare at the end so we can glue the tube together in the next step.

Step 4: Glue Butterfly Body Together
Roll the rectangle into a tube and glue together. It helps if you roll and hold the cardstock in place for a few minutes for it to form the rolled, tube like shape. Pipe a bead of glue along the length of the tube and close the tube onto the glue strip. Use craft clips to hold the tube in place until glue is dry.

Step 5: Make Butterfly Antennae
Fold a pipe cleaner in half and then twist the ends to make the butterfly antennae. Glue the shaped antennae to the back of the butterfly’s head. You can get creative and make the antennae any sort of fun shape.

Step 6: Glue the Wings to the Butterfly Body
Place glue on the butterfly’s wings and glue it to the tube near the center. Hold in place until the glue sets. Optionally, you can fold or score the butterfly wings so that they bend back slightly and have a flying effect.

Step 7: Punch Holes for String
Using a hole punch, punch a hole in either side of the top of the tube for string to be attached to the tube. Thread the string through the holes and tie a knot at the top.

Step 8: Add Twine
Using fishing line or colorful bakers twine, loop through the holes that were punched and tie the ends in a knot.

Step 9: Cut Paper Straw
Make a handle for the butterfly windsock by notching the end of a paper straw with a craft knife or scissors (craft knifes are sharp! adults only!).

Step 10: Make The Handle
Slide the string onto the end of the paper straw and secure in place with a piece of strong, clear packing tape to keep it from slipping off the end. Wrap some pretty washi tape around the handle area to reinforce the paper straw and make it stronger. Take the butterfly windsock outside and see it fly in the wind!
