How to Make Mummy Baked Brie Step by Step!
1. Slice The Dough & Wrap The Brie Wheel
Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.
Unravel the refrigerated crescent roll dough on to a large cutting board or surface. Press the pieces of dough together so that you have one large sheet with minimal lines.
Using a sharp knife, slice the dough into long thing strips that are about 1/3 of an inch thick. The strips of dough should be long enough that they can wrap all the way around the brie and connect together on the back side of the brie wheel.
If the dough isn’t sticking and connecting, you can add a few drops of warm water to help connect the two ends of the dough strip.
2. Wrap the Brie Wheel Like a Mummy
Keep wrapping the brie wheel with the dough strips- wrapping at different angles with each pass. Make sure that you are connecting the dough at the back each time. Leave a little open space for the eyes to peek out.
Optional: If you want a golden, crispy crust you can make an egg wash for the dough. Combine 1 egg yolk with about 1 tablespoon of water and whisk together. Brush onto the dough before placing into the oven.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the brie mummy on the center of the sheet. Bake the brie at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until dough is golden and cooked through. Cheese should be bubbly. Remove from the oven and add two candy monster eyes to the top.
3. Create the Grazing Board
Place the brie mummy at the center of a charcuterie board. Spoon cherry, raspberry, apricot, fig or blueberry jam into a small serving dish.
Add apple slices, pear slices, sweet grapes, fresh blue berries and slices of crusty french bread around the baked brie mummy. You can also add other tasty options like salami, prosciutto, olives, gherkin pickles, dried apricots, almonds, walnuts or pecans- whatever you personally. Serve immediately and refrigerate any leftover brie in an airtight container.
Brie Mummy Recipe Options & Alternatives:
- If you can’t find monster eyes you can use something like dried raisins, dried cherries or dried cranberries as another option for mummy eyes. Sliced black olive can also work too. Press them into the cheese them after baking.
- You can substitute puff pastry for the crescent dough. If you are using puff pastry (pepperidge farms makes a nice, frozen puff pastry)…just defrost the dough and create the mummy like we have. Follow puff pastry package instructions for baking.
- Some people like to add jam to the brie wheel before baking. If you’d like to do this slice off the top white rind and spread around a few teaspoons of your favorite jam. Place the top white rind back on and wrap like we have in our instructions. Don’t go crazy with the jam, it can ooze out during baking.
