How to Make a Main Street Mickey Pumpkin
STEP 1: Print Out Our FREE Template and Tape to Pumpkin
Gather all of your supplies and start warming up your Hot Knife with the exacto knife attachment (use the highest heat setting). Print out the FREE Mickey Mouse template stencil from our printables library (link at the bottom of this webpage).
You can adjust the size of the Mickey template by a percentage in print settings dialogue box at print time if you are using larger or smaller pumpkins as needed.
Trim down the template so you don’t have a lot of excess paper and it’s just Mickey’s face. Tape the template to the front of the larger faux pumpkin. Avoid any seams from the manufacturing process and make sure they are on the back or sides.
Note: It helps to cut small slits around the template and corners so it will fit flat against the faux pumpkin
STEP 2: Create an Outline of Mickey’s Face
Using a ball point pen or a pumpkin poking tool (like you might find in a store bought pumpkin carving kit) trace around the edge of the of the Mickey template. The more holes you can poke the better your carving will turnout. When you are all done remove the paper template. Your pumpkin should look something like the image below.
STEP 3: Carve Mickey’s Face into the Pumpkin
Insert the Hot Knife with the Exacto knife tip into any hole to start carving. Slowly carve the face from the foam pumpkin. The slower you go the better the results. Be very careful! The knife is VERY SHARP and the hot knife is VERY HOT! Remove pieces from the pumpkin after they have been carved.
STEP 4: Carve an Opening for the Back
Next we’ll carve an opening for the back of the foam pumpkin with the Hot Knife . I started with a much smaller opening initially and decided to make it bigger while I was attempting the next step. Make sure your opening is about as large as mine before proceeding!
Here you’ll also want to hot glue the wood bead to the back cover so that you can easily remove the back of the pumpkin and access the LED candle that will go inside. If you don’t have a wood bead around you could carve a circle the size of your finger to more easily pull the back of the pumpkin off.
STEP 5: Hot Glue Vellum to Inside of Pumpkin
Grab a sheet of Opaque Vellum Paper and cut separate pieces for each facial feature (4 pieces total). They should be big enough to cover the facial feature and allow for hot glue to adhere the vellum to the inside of the pumpkin. Do a dry fitting of each piece and see how it looks and fits from the front before gluing it down permanently with hot glue.
This vellum step helps to make the pumpkin “glow” at night and look more like the real Main Street Mickey. You don’t have to do this step if you don’t want to but I think it’s worth doing if you have the time and want a more polished & professional look.
STEP 6: Hot Glue Mickey’s Ears to the Head
Using the Hot Knife remove the stems from the smaller 3 inch foam pumpkins. Some pumpkin stems unscrew from the pumpkin.
Using a pencil and measuring tape….mark where you want the ears to go on Mickey’s head. Make sure that the spacing is even and equal distant from the stem of Mickey’s head. You don’t want one ear to be lower than the other or crooked so spend a little time figuring out exactly where you want to glue your ears down.
After marking your spots, pool a fair amount of hot glue onto the area where the stems used to be on the smaller pumpkins. Quickly adhere the smaller pumpkin to Mickey’s head. Hold in place until the hot glue has set. You can carefully add more hot glue if needed after the ears are in place.
STEP 7: Add an LED Candle or Tea Light to the Inside of Mickey
Add a bright, non flammable LED candle or tea light to the inside of Mickey’s head using the back opening you created earlier. The bigger and brighter the better! Now your Main Street Mickey Pumpkin is ready to display on your front porch for trick or treaters to enjoy!
